Life is Like . . . A Pup-Cup

Last month we studied the book of Proverbs in church. There was so much talk about the dangers of making unwise decisions to follow your passions in the heat of the moment. Whether it's going in the open door of an adulterous woman or following your foolish friends down a dark alley. There's the thrill of the moment . . . the rush of pleasure. But then you're cleaning up crap for a long time after.

It's like feeding your dog a "pup-cup" for the first time. You know that the family that gave him up did so because he has stomach issues. You've dealt with them yourself. But you want your dog to be the fun one who can eat whatever. You take him to the new ice cream shop where everyone and their dogs are gathered. The atmosphere is lively, the evening air is warm and the people and their dogs are happy. So you buy him a pup-cup, cause what's the worst that can happen? That first taste of ice cream and sugar sends your puppy into a moment of bliss. Everyone laughs as he slurps it up like he's never eaten before. And it's over. That was fun.

But then . . . he has diarrhea for the next 3 days in the house at night and you're cleaning it up every morning. Nice. Was that moment fun? Yes. Was it worth it? No. Will you feed him ice cream ever again? No.

The decisions we make have consequences, some that are more than just inconvenient, they are life-altering. We need to stop and think before we act.
